In 2012, the Labour Department of Hong Kong published its “Report of the Policy Study on Standard Working Hours”. Since then, the Standard Working Hours Committee has been holding regular meetings with employer and employee representatives, conducting consultation and public education campaigns. Progress has been slow but the final report is due next week. Any proposed legislation is likely to be “light touch” compared with other jurisdictions which dictate maximum working hours; given the working culture in Hong Kong, it would be a brave move to regulate too heavily.
