Last week's much praised Green Paper from the UK Government on industrial strategy set out a vision for a 21st century post-industrial world. But, once the Green Paper becomes a White Paper and business and Government seek to implement the strategy, is the right mind set going to be in place?
The US Defence Department Biofabrication Initiative is an example of how it could work.
Rockwell and others are contributing shared expertise and cash into the programme. The outcome from their investment means Rockwell will have more engineers skilled in biofabrication; their skills can then be used to commercialise other opportunities for Rockwell.
This kind of entrepreneurialism is often lacking in EU/UK research programmes.
Let's hope we can adapt and learn from the US approach to research and commercialisation.
